ABOUT GOD AND COUNTRY
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord…” (Ps. 33:12).
Over the years of living, I have discovered a common trait in every human heart.
God has fashioned the human heart with a need for worship.
What we prioritize, we worship. What we worship, we prioritize.
Every person on the planet has a hole in their heart that needs to be filled with something. As Christians, we know the truth is that this void in our hearts can only be adequately filled by a relationship with God. Yet, the desire for connection is so strong in us that people rarely have the patience to wait for the Heavenly Father to show Himself.
Instead, they choose to bow before someone or something else. For some, the idol is money and power. For others hatred and violence fills the cavern of the heart. Occasionally, it is self who becomes the object of our affections. Whatever god we choose to bow down before, it is bound to become the priority of our lives.
Show me what you spend your time doing every day, and I will have a pretty good idea of the idol you have fashioned for yourself. It is simply a matter of focus. We worship what we look at, what we prioritize.
Consider the children of Israel. While Moses is up on the mountain communing with God, the Israelites quickly lost their focus. They needed something to worship, to see and touch. So, they went before Aaron and demanded that he fashion them a god they could offer sacrifice to. Aaron decides that this is a good idea and fashions a golden calf. He forms a tangible image that everyone can see. In short, he tells the people to make this calf the priority of their existence. Spend your time dancing around the calf, and you will find the happiness you hunger for. What we prioritize in life is what we worship.
GOD COMES FIRST.
Imagine what might have happened to the children of Israel if they had remembered their relationship with God instead of trying to fashion a golden calf? Christians know that the priority of our lives must be the things of God. We need to wait on the Lord to reveal Himself, even when we do not sense His presence.
The Bible tells us that:
“Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night…
And whatever he does shall prosper” (Psalms 1:1-3).
Notice what the man who is blessed worships? The law of the Lord. In fact, the godly man delights in it. What we worship, we prioritize. What we prioritize, we worship.
AS WE PRIORITIZE GOD, WE ALSO VALUE OUR COUNTRY.
The truth is that what we worship individually, tends to be reflected in what people value corporately. In other words, align your heart with God, and you will be doing your part to help those around you align theirs. Eventually, if enough of God’s people make God their personal Lord and Savior, the country will follow suit.
Like the ripples of a pond, it starts with a heart, then two, then a church, then a neighborhood, then a city, a state, a nation – and dare I say it? A world. Consider what effect it might have had, if a few of God’s faithful had shown up the night Aaron was fashioning the golden calf? The story might have turned out completely different.
As Americans, we are extremely fortunate to live in a country with the freedoms we enjoy. Those freedoms are a gift of God and have been handed down to us by the shed blood of countless brave soldiers who have served. Those who have fought and laid down their lives to protect our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Yet, what does our nation prioritize? What captures the focus of our country? If we look around us, it is easy to see that God is not what we are worshipping. Power. Fame. Fortune. Greed. Violence and Injustice seem to be the order of the day. These are the things that demand our attention. These are the idols of our affection. These are the golden calves we dance around.
PERHAPS THE FAULT IN NOT WITH OUR COUNTRY, BUT WITH US.
“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (2 Chron. 7:14).
God does not say, “if the country will humble itself…” – He directs this command at His people. At you and me. We are the reason our nation has gone astray. You and me and every Christian who proclaims to have a relationship with God. We have made the temporal things our idol because we did not have the faith to make God the priority of our lives. We worship what we focus on. What we focus on we worship.
Today, I dare you to take a stand for Christ. Wear a God and Country shirt, because you know that the only way for our nation to be healed is for God’s people to humble themselves, pray and seek His face and turn from their wicked ways. My wicked ways. Yours. All of ours.
The truth is that each of us was made for worship. If not God, then something else. And as long as we continue to dance around the golden calf that we have so carefully fashioned, it will be hard to hear the voice of God.
Just ask the children of Israel.
